The Houston Auto Accidents Attorneys at DeSimone Law Office last week discussed the more serious neck and back injury symptoms suffered in car accidents by our clients. Radiating pain from the neck into the arms or the low back into the legs were signs of herniated discs, discs out of place impinging on the nerves running up and down the spine. Numbness and tingling in the extremities were also signs noted for herniated discs. When theses symptoms exist a test called a MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) is prescribed by the medical doctor or chiropractor. An MRI will show what xrays can’t, which in this case are if any of the discs of the neck and back are herniated. If there is a positive finding of disc herniation, then a referral to a pain management specialist or an orthopedic doctor will be made to try and relieve the pain from the personal injury. The specialist examines the client and determines the appropriate course of action. Sometimes a combination of continued physical therapy and medicine will be ordered in mild cases. In more severe cases epidural steroid injections can be administered into the spine to relieve the pain. If these methods don’t work, then the medical expense of back or neck surgery may be warranted.
